The organic market in Canada is growing: promotional activities for the European Ecceamerica project are underway
Canada continues to be one of the world’s most vibrant markets for organic products. According to data presented by Tia Loftsgard (Canada Organic Trade Association) during the IFOAM webinar in May dedicated to the Canadian and US markets, the Canadian organic sector is now worth CAD 9.01 billion, with stable demand and increasingly aware consumers: 87% buy organic products regularly and 60% are willing to pay a premium consistent with their values.
The country is at the center of rapidly growing trade flows—almost CAD 1 billion in imports in 2024 (+13%) and a similar value in exports—supported by equivalence agreements with the EU, the US, and numerous international partners. It is a dynamic context, reinforced by the revision of organic standards planned for 2025 and the development of the national Organic Action Plan.
In this scenario rich in opportunities, promoting the culture of European organic farming is now more essential than ever. And this is precisely where the commitment of Ecceamerica continues, the European project promoted by Unaprol – Consorzio Olivicolo Italiano and CAP – Confederação dos Agricultores de Portugal, a three-year program to inform and promote European extra virgin olive oil and organic wines in foreign markets, the US and Canada, co-financed by the European Union under EU Regulation No. 1144/2014.
After the success of activities in the United States, which are still ongoing, it is now time for Canada, where a long series of promotional days – over 200 in total – in stores and restaurants aims to introduce North American consumers to the quality, authenticity, and traceability of European extra virgin olive oil and organic wines, in a favorable and receptive socio-economic context, as demonstrated by the data.
The program, now well established after its first year of activity, includes initiatives throughout the country, designed to involve both restaurant and retail audiences, creating opportunities for meetings, tastings, and in-depth discussions.
In selected restaurants, chefs and staff will enrich their menus by promoting the products available for tasting and guiding customers in their discovery of European organic extra virgin olive oil. Informative materials and technical data sheets will accompany customers in their discovery of the sensory characteristics and values of the EU-certified supply chain. At the same time, tastings, discussions, and informative activities dedicated to European organic olive oil and wine will be organized in Canadian retail outlets. The promotional spaces, set up with campaign materials, will offer consumers a clear and immediately recognizable path to discovering European organic products.
